Kyrkjestølen - Maristova
Crossing Filefjell and the King's Road's highest point.
The King's Road over Filefjell was opened in 1793. At Tyin Filefjell, you are ideally located with easy access to several of the finest sections of the road.
The mountain pass over Filefjell traverses easily walkable high-mountain terrain and features several interesting attractions along the way. The Bergen King's Road was built in the late 18th century, and the section over Filefjell, between Kyrkjestølen in Vang and Maristuen in Lærdal, was completed in 1793.
If you stay with us and book one of our King's Road packages, transport to and from the starting point of the tour is included.
The trail from Kyrkjestølen stretches in a straight line over the mountain, and with Jotunheimen as a backdrop, the view is magnificent.
The trail starts in light birch forest at 950 meters above sea level. From here, there's an ascent of approximately 300 vertical meters before you reach the mountain summit at 1220 meters above sea level. Here, at the highest point of the King's Road, stands Stiftstøtta, a large marble monument erected in 1793. It's a fantastic rest stop rich in history.
Up on the mountain, the terrain is easy to walk and flat before the path descends again towards Maristuen at approximately 800 meters above sea level.
