Marked snowshoe trail - RED - Steinhaug

Snowshoe trail through snow-covered nature to beautiful viewpoints.

Three people snowshoeing up a mountain

The Red trail offers charming paths winding between cabins, untouched nature, and a fantastic view of the valley from the top of Steinhaug.

Start your trip directly from Filefjellstuene and follow the paths winding through the cabin areas. Along the way, you'll pass Tyinkrysset Fjellstue, where you can take a break and enjoy some good food and drinks. After crossing the main road, you'll continue into untouched nature, surrounded by our majestic local mountains. Here, you'll truly experience a winter wonderland. From the top of Steinhaug, you'll get a magnificent view of Tyinkrysset and further down the valley. Take a break and enjoy your packed lunch at the top before continuing down through the winter forest back to Filefjellstuene.

For an extra magical experience, the trip is recommended in the evening. On clear nights, you can experience a spectacular starry sky here at Tyin Filefjell, which truly captures the attention of both young and old.

The trail is clearly marked with yellow plastic poles with reflectors at the top, making it easy to navigate both during the day and when darkness falls.

Note: Remember to take your snowshoes off and on at two road crossings along the main road. Use snowshoes only on snow and ice!

Good to know about our marked snowshoe trails

Trail maps are available on Strava. Here are direct links to the different trails:

Green trail - Scavenger hunt at Synhaug

Yellow trail - Bøastølen

Red trail - Steinhaug

The trails are marked with sturdy plastic poles in different colors — green, yellow, and red — where green marks the easiest routes and red the most demanding. Each pole has a reflector at the top, making it easy to use a headlamp and enjoy an evening walk under the open starry sky and moonlight.

The trail markers are placed so that you can always see the next one from the last, but as the terrain gets more challenging, they also become harder to spot.

Please note that trails are not marked along roads due to potential conflict with snowplow markers.

All trails are in natural terrain, along paths and walkways, not on roads. Here you get a true nature experience on foot or snowshoes.

Some trails cross alpine and cross-country ski tracks, so be careful when crossing them. Always follow the snowshoe trail markings and avoid walking on cross-country or alpine ski tracks with snowshoes.

Some of the trails follow parts of The King's Road, which is also used by skiers. Please be aware and considerate, especially in areas where skiers may be coming at high speed.

You can rent snowshoes, poles, and headlamps at the Filefjellstuene reception. Feel free to drop by, but if you want to ensure equipment availability, we recommend pre-booking by sending an email to booking@tyin.no.
