Øye - Tyinkrysset
A historical hike from inland fjords and forests to the open mountain plateau.
The King's Road over Filefjell was opened in 1793. At Tyin Filefjell, you are ideally located with easy access to several of the finest sections of the road.
The historical road between Øye and Tyinkrysset starts at the end of Vangsmjøsa by Øye Stave Church. The path mainly consists of grass and gravel, taking you from forested inland to the open mountain landscape on the Filefjell plateau.
If you stay with us and book one of our King's Road packages, transport to the starting point of the trip is included.
From Øye Stave Church, follow the old E16 for 1.4 kilometers before turning left onto the historical road marked with a clear sign.
The road goes up and down gentle slopes towards Varpe Bridge. Just before Kølabrune Bridge, there is a steep ascent until the terrain flattens out towards Tyinkrysset. Turn left onto Grøvstølvegen and end the trip at Filefjellstuene, where you can stay overnight and enjoy delicious local food.
This part of the King's Road features several good examples of French road construction, where the road runs straight for as long as possible despite the hilly terrain. The steep slopes were once impassable for horses with carts without multiple breaks.
