The thousandth meter

Spectacular bike ride from mountain to fjord

Cyclists on Tusenmeteren with the mountains of Hurrungane as a backdrop

The Thousand Meters, or Tunnel Road as it is also called, is a fantastic combination of cultural history and nature experiences on two wheels. From Tyin Filefjell you have easy access to this adventurous trip.

Until 1962, this was the main road between Tyin and Årdal, and a major tourist attraction for both mountain and cruise tourists. Now the road has been restored as a hiking trail, and is ready for adventurers on two wheels!

It took more than 30 years to build the spectacular road at its time, and the road was of great importance for the development of industry in Årdal, and the connection between Valdres and Indre Sogn. Click here to read more about the exciting story at Visit Årdal.

From Tyin Filefjell, we primarily recommend the 1000-meter as a day trip with a round trip the same way, but there are several alternatives.

Our recommendation: Round trip from Tyinkrysset

From Tyinkrysset or Filefjellstuene you can cycle along Fv53 towards Årdal to Tyinosen (approx. 12.5 km) or Sletterust (17.5 km). On this part of the trip you cycle on a road with relatively little traffic, and fantastic views of Lake Tyinvannet and the peaks behind in Jotunheimen.

At Tyinosen or Sletterust you turn off the county road towards Tunnelvegen/1000-meteren, which follows the mountainside on the opposite side of the valley. If you choose to turn off at Tyinosen, you cycle on a road of variable quality on the south side of Lake Torolmen for the first part, before you reach Tunnelvegen. From here you cycle on a gravel road for about 12 km (17.5 km if you turn off at Tyinosen) to the lookout point at 1000 meters above sea level, where you have a fantastic view down to Øvre Årdal.

From the viewpoint you can either choose to return to Tyinkrysset, or cycle some – or all – of the 26 hairpin bends down towards Øvre Årdal if you have extra energy left for the return trip. After about 5 km of tight bends you will meet Fv53 again, which can take you all the way down to Øvre Årdal if you wish.

NB: The tunnel road is narrow and largely unsecured, and is best suited for those who have some experience on a bike. Take it easy and stay towards the mountain, and if necessary get off your bike if there are parts you are not comfortable cycling. It is not recommended to cycle here during heavy rainfall, as the road may be prone to rockfalls.

Other options

  1. If you have a car and the ability to transport bicycles yourself, you can start the trip from Tyinosen or Sletterust, if you want to avoid cycling on the road.
  2. The guide company Bulder & Brak offers the 1000-meter as a day experience from Øvre Årdal, with two different options.
  3. For larger groups we can offer both guiding and bicycle transport on request, depending on capacity. Please contact booking@tyin.no for inquiries.
