Get up close with the major peaks in Hurrungane
The 2083-meter high Store Soleibotntind is located amidst the string of major peaks in Hurrungane, yet it is relatively accessible for anyone with some experience in steep mountain hikes.
The trip to Store Soleibotntind requires a short drive before you start hiking, but it is so beautiful that we have chosen to include it here anyway. And to top it all off, the drive itself is also scenic.
To reach the starting point, first drive Fv 53 to Øvre Årdal, then continue on Tindevegen towards Turtagrø (toll road, payable by card). Along Tindevegen, there is a parking bay at the starting point of the hike, by the bridge over Tverrelvi. If this is full, find another suitable parking spot along the road where you do not obstruct other traffic.
The walk to the top from the parking lot is about 4 km. From the parking lot, you cross the bridge, and then take the paved path towards the top. The terrain is mostly easy to walk, but the last few meters of elevation towards the top are characterized by some gravel and loose material. Just before the top there is a small cliff that must be climbed, but it is neither exposed nor difficult. The walk is partly marked with scattered cairns.
From the summit, you have fantastic views towards Store Austabotntind, Ringstindene, and Skagastølstindene – which surround Store Soleibotntind on all sides. The Jostedalsbreen glacier also glimmers in the sun to the northwest.
Allow approximately 5-7 hours for the hike + driving time from Tyin Filefjell (about 1 hour each way).
